A double delay in updates! I did not get a post written for 3/17 as there was just too much going on. I had been at a work event in Texas and then flew to Rochester to visit Jim. He and I spent St. Patrick's day driving to Baltimore for Unpub 7. It was also Jim's birthday and nice to celebrate the day with him. So for these reasons I did not write a post on 3/17. Then for some reason the 3/24 post did not save correctly and is being uploaded late. | |
Unpub 7 was a good experience. We arrived in time to attend the Q & A panel with Zev Shlasinger of WizKids games. We also went to the Designer social and met some cool people.Perhaps the best part of the event was the motivation it gave Jim and I to finish projects we were working on. Action News Team came together just in time for playtesting on Saturday, and Eggs in a Basket was a similar race to the finish. Despite both games seeing their first public playtest all went very well. We spent most of our Saturday session testing Action News Team. The mechanics seemed to work nicely, but the play revealed that players start off too powerful and the engine building accelerates too quickly. Fortunately, some adjustments to the backend math should fix this without changing the feel of the game in any negative ways. The folks who played were extremely helpful with their feedback, which was awesome! Jim ran one demo of Eggs in a Basket at the end of the session and we were able to make quick adjustments for Sunday. Sunday afternoon we focused on Eggs in a Basket, testing some new cards Jim created Saturday night. Although Sunday afternoon felt like it had lower attendance, we were able to get in enough rounds of this quicker game to make additional progress. We opted not to test Action News Team on Sunday as the needed changes were clear from Saturday, and too complex to make overnight. All in all, Jim and I both felt good about the progress on these games and are confident they will be ready for more testing at Unpub Mini SD and Gen Con.
Judging is underway for the Cardboard Edison award and it has been somewhat surreal to see Spell Bound Books and Frankenstein Academy popping up in their social media accounts. The contest also made it into the news segment of The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast in episode and the hosts mentioned Frankenstein Academy as a game that stood out to them, which was amazing. The contest winner will be announced on April 6th!
